Books of Interest

In October last year, our chapter sponsored an audioconference about branding. Attended by many members and other fund raisers, the session was titled "Branding: The Right Message, at the Right Time, to the Right People, in the Right Way."

Dee Vandeventer was the presenter, and she recommended many books in the course of the 90-minute session. Here's an outline of her reading list...

FORCES FOR GOOD: THE SIX PRACTICES OF HIGH-IMPACT NONPROFITS by Leslie Crutchfield and Heather McLeod Grant--
"Through extensive surveys and interviews, the authors develop six practices common to high-impact nonprofits: offering advocacy efforts and service, harnessing market forces and leveraging the power and resources of business, engaging individuals from outside the organization, working with and through other organizations, learning to adapt, and sharing leadership by empowering others." (Booklist, 10/15/2007)

PURPLE COW by Seth Godin...
"The world is changing ever more rapidly, and the rules of marketing are no different, writes Godin, the field's reigning guru (Permission Marketing: Unleashing the Ideavirus). The old ways-run-of-the-mill TV commercials, ads in te Wall Street Journal and so on-don't work like they used to, because such messages are so plentiful that consumers have tuned them out. This means you have to toss out everything you know and do something "remarkable" (the way a purple cow in a field of Guernseys would be remarkable) to have any effect at all. Godin cites companies like HBO, Starbucks and JetBlue, all of which created new ways of doing old businesses and saw their brands sizzle as a result." (Publishers Weekly)

EMOTIONAL BRANDING: HOW SUCCESSFUL BRANDS GAIN THE IRRATIONAL EDGE by Daryl Travis...
"Travis shows that a brand is more than a trademark, a slogan, or a product; a brand establishes an identity, stirs feelings, and makes a connection with the consumer. He discusses the economic value of a brand, stresses the relationship between brand and corporate mission, covers the role of technology in brand communication, and details the various components of a brand (logo, slogan, advertising, etc.). Travis then considers integrated marketing and the stages of brand management." (David Rouse, Booklist)

INTEGRATED MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS: PUTTING IT TOGETHER & MAKING IT WORK by Don E. Schultz, Stanley I. Tannenbaum, Robert F. Lauterborn... "This book challenges us to confront a fundamental dilemma in today's marketing--the fact that mass media advertising, by itself, no longer works. The answer lies in customer-focused marketing, a key planning tool that can--in today's diverse, fragmented marketplace--explain the lifestyles, attitudes, and motivations of distinct buyer groups and predict their likely behaviors in the future. This book also shows how to put an integrated program into practice, with expert guidance on planning, coordinating, and controlling the entire communications process. Along the way, the authors tackle those critical questions that too often impede marketing decisions. Extensive examples and two in-depth success stories detail how top organizations are sharpening their competitive edge through integrated communications programs." (Back Cover)

National Philanthropy Day

Awards Nominations Open for 2008

Each year, the Association of Fundraising Progessionals (AFP) sponsors National Philanthropy Day to recognize outstanding philanthropic acts. This includes individual, corporate and foundation gifts, outstanding fundraising professional, outstanding volunteer fundraisers and outstanding youth in philanthropy.

In professional fundraising, individuals and organizations represent philanthropy at its best. Our local chapter of AFP, the California Capital Chapter, honors those in the region who exemplify the ethics, commitment, dedication, and talent necessary toimprove our society.

You are invited to participate in the 23rd Annual National Philanthropy Day Awards. Please identify an individual, corporation, or foundation that you believe exemplifies the spirit of the event.

Those chosen will receive, in the the company of their peers and the media, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual or organization in the Northern California philanthropic community. The National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2009 at the Sacramento Convention Center.

"Nominating Kaiser for Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist last year was a great experience.," says Allison Cagley of Exploirt Science Center. "Working on the nomination not only made the folks at Kaiser feel good, it helped build friendships with my contacts and further the relationship between a donor and an organization. So many times, donors, both individual and corporate, are alwyas at the being asked end of the conversation. To give back to them in this very tangible way was very gratifying."

You too can recognize one of your donors, volunteers or a development professional. You'll be glad you did.

Please click on the links below for criteria and forms. All nominations and supporting materials must BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY ON OR BEFORE THE DEADLINE OF FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2008.

Will The Tax Extenders Be Passed in 2008?

Government Affairs Committee

For those of us in the charitable fundraising field, there are six specific provision in TTRA (Temporary Tax Relief Act) 2007 that are noted to be of interest, the IRA Charitable Rollover being one that garnered much attention of fundraisers. These provisions were passed for years 2006 and 2007 in the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006), and all expired on Dec. 31, 2007. The six provisions include the following: 1.) Qualified conservation contributions 2.) IRA charitable rollover 3.) Enhanced contributions for gift of "Apparently Wholesome Food: 4.) Enchanced contribution for gift of books to K-12 schools 5.) Enhanced contributions for gifts of computers 6.) Favorable bais rules for gits by subchapter and S. corporations.

For 2008, the key tax writers in Congress are Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and Rep. Charles Rangle (D-NY), Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. Fortunately, there is a strong coalition of charitable organizations that support the IRA Charitable Rollover and the other five tax extenders. The charitable coalition includes members from INdependent Sector, The Council on Foundations, The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, The National Committee on Planned Giving, The American Council on Gift Annuities, The Association of Fundraising Professionals and other major organizations. With leadership by respected attorney Conrad Teitell, the coalition was able to obtain 25 Senate cosponsors (S. 819) and 98 House cosponsors (H.R. 1419) for the Public Good IRA Rollover Act.

Sen. Ken Conrad is Chair of the Senate Budget Committee. On Feb. 27, 2008, Sen. Conrad suggested that both the tax extenders and the energy package passed by the House could be included in the budget resolution. While it is not certain, it may also be possible for a one-year extention of AMT relief to be added to the federal budget resolution.

The major benefit for supporters of the tax extenders is that the budget resolution only requires a Senate vote of 51% to pass, not the 60 votes required for many tax bills. This makes the Senate budget resolution a favorable path for passage of other tax provisions.
