During a visit with one of my organization’s supporters, she asked me the question, “Tim, do you enjoy what you do?” Of course I said yes. That was the expected polite answer, wasn’t it? But as I left her place, the question lingered on in my head. I had to be honest with myself. This time it was only me in the car. I could think or say anything I want. After a bit more thought, I finally had to admit – I didn’t enjoy my work – I loved my work! It is not always enjoyable but it is meaningful work. It isn’t easy, just asks many of the fundraisers trying to raise funds in this tough economy, but it has so many dimensions. For starters, being in fundraising reminded me to look beyond myself. It also introduced me to scores of individuals who are generous, compassionate and truly concerned about making a difference in this world. Being involved with AFP in the past ten years is just one of those great bonuses.

As this year’s president of the California Capital Chapter, I have the great privilege of representing professionals in the field of fundraising in our region. What an honor it is to be associated with such a passionate, competent and dedicated group. They believe in causes larger than themselves, they do more than what they are paid to do, they focus on building a better world through their organization’s mission, and they are innovative and resourceful and do their work with the highest ethical standards. In fact, according to an AFP survey, one of the top reasons members join AFP is because they believe in preserving the integrity of fundraising and adhere to the Donor Bill of Rights.

I invite you to experience AFP! Our chapter has been around for 25 years and AFP marks its 50th year anniversary in June of this year. If you are in the field of fundraising or interested in fundraising, join us in one of our luncheon programs. Learn, network, and meet colleagues. Make life-long friends.

Have a wonderful 2010! Oh by the way, I hope you too love what you do. See you soon.

Tim Rodriguera, CFRE
President
